'Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.' - Rita F. Pierson
Wellbeing is foundational to the development of the whole child.
At OLHC our philosophy of teaching and learning sees us tending to the needs of the whole child. We know that our students thrive when they are connected to peers, trusted adults and a positive school community. We know they will be successful in learning and feel good about themselves when they know where they are as learners, and know what their next learning steps will be.
Staff at OLHC work together as a team, tuned into each and every individual student, building and sustaining respectful and supportive relationships.
Staff are proactive and responsive to the needs of students with approaches in place that protect the dignity of each student, provide opportunities for students to develop and practice skills in regulation, emotional literacy, resilience, and awareness of self and others. We have educated staff and planned spaces for break time support, and reregulation during learning blocks.
This consistent team approach includes social and emotional learning and teaching with the Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships curriculum as a core document, and well as our diocesan Relationships and Sexuality curriculum. We also provide intervention supports in Peaceful Kids and Peaceful Classrooms. We also have a school counsellor working with students, family members, and staff two days a week.
Our school values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE are taught, modeled and practiced as an integral part of our Social, Emotional and Wellbeing learning. Our approach to supporting students to thrive is grounded in School Wide Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports. Our expectations are explicitly taught and clear to all members of our community, providing students with consistency and predictability. We build and maintain a very positive, calm and responsive environment in our school.
